The Guardians of the Western Approaches

There is a legend that the Archangel Michael appeared to some Cornish monks during the time of the Anglo-Saxon invasion of Britain and told them to build a monastery on what is now St Michaels Mount in Mount’s Bay in the far South West of Cornwall. Similar apparitions happened in the first millennium in Brittany, France, and in South West Ireland at Skellig Michael.

The Guardians of the Western Approaches is a book and painting project that explores the possibility that Western Christian Culture is under threat and there is a need to engage in spiritual combat for the Western World.

Below is a design sketch of St Michael’s Mount which will be used in the (Work in Progress) painting called the Virgin of the Rocks with the Child Jesus blessing the Archangels and St John the Baptist.
